I am a 3rd year Occupational Therapy student at the University of the Pacific.

MY DANCE JOURNEY

OG GARAGE DANCER

My first experiences with dance began in my garage when I would be the “cameraman” for my brothers who were always learning the choreography to popular music videos. They would show me videos of dance teams at competitions, and since then, being on a dance team became one of my biggest aspirations. I grew up in a small town in the Mojave Desert, and dance studios were almost non-existent. I knew that being on a team was an opportunity that wouldn’t come until college, but I continued fueling what started as hobby into something that became my passion.

THE “DANCER DUO”

Throughout middle school and high school, I started dancing with one of my best friends, making YouTube videos just for fun. My garage was our studio—a cluttered space with no mirrors, and barely a working sound system. We would learn choreography through watching videos over and over again, because we simply did what we had to do. Soon, we began to make our own choreography and became the “dancer duo” performing at our high school’s pep rallies and taking every opportunity we could to showcase our work, since dance wasn’t a common in thing in our community. This is was the closest thing we had at the time to being on a team, and it further reinforced my dreams of competing on a stage one day.

MY FIRST LOVE

Getting into college became a year of many firsts. My first audition. My first callback. My first team. My first time dancing with a group. My first time competing, experiencing an actual dance rehearsal, and even my first time choreographing for a set. Dreams that once aspired from the confines of my hometown had finally settled. It was everything I had ever imagined, if not better. I dedicated everything into this team and it felt like a never-ending honeymoon stage of a relationship.
